Technology Demonstration
Frontline demonstration of newly developed cashew varieties of ICAR-DCR Puttur
ICAR-Directorate of Cashew Research has recently developed new varieties Nethra Ganga, Nethra Jumbo-1, Nethra Jumbo-2 and Nethra Ubhaya. Nethra Ganga, Nethra Jumbo-1 and Nethra Jumbo-2 are jumbo nut varieties. Nethra Ubhaya is a dual-purpose variety suitable for both nuts and apples. There has been an increasing demand for planting material of these varieties by the farmers.
So, a project on ‘Frontline Technology Demonstrations (FLTDs) of newly developed cashew varieties of ICAR-DCR Puttur’ to demonstrate the performance of the above varieties in the farmer fields was undertaken. This is also aimed at promoting the adoption of these varieties in traditional and non-traditional cashew-growing areas of India, and expanding the area under cashew cultivation to increase production.

Under this project, 175 FLTDs were established with the above-mentioned five varieties and the check variety Bhaskara in 175 farmers’ fields, each with one acre. In the year 2023-24, 91 FLTDs were established in 91 farmers’ fields in three states viz. Karnataka (Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chitradurga, Mysuru, Hassan, Haveri, Tumakuru, Gadag, Koppal, Kodagu), Kerala (Kasaragod) and Andhra Pradesh (Anantpur). Whereas in the year 2024-25, 84 FLTDs were established in the farmers’ fields in four states viz. Karnataka (Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga), Kerala (Kannur), Goa and Andhra Pradesh (Parvathipuram Manyam). Technical advisories were given to farmers on a continuous basis, and the fields are under regular supervision.
The project was financially supported by the Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development (DCCD), Kochi, Kerala.
