Dr. V. Thondaiman has extensive research experience in spices, plantation, medicinal and aromatic crops, with a strong focus on crop improvement and sustainable production technologies. His early research concentrated on the genetic improvement and evaluation of important medicinal plant species including Enicostemma axillare, Desmodium, Costus, and Hemidesmus, contributing to the development of improved planting materials and crop production practices.
He has also carried out significant research on integrated nutrient management in palmarosa, focusing on optimizing nutrient use for improved growth, productivity and resource-use efficiency. His work has contributed to developing scientifically sound nutrient management strategies for sustainable cultivation of aromatic crops.
At the ICAR–Directorate of Cashew Research, his research is primarily focused on developing efficient cashew-based cropping systems suitable for rainfed conditions. He is actively engaged in evaluating intercropping models that improve land utilization, farm profitability and long-term sustainability while maintaining soil health and ecosystem productivity.
His current research also emphasizes the use of plant growth regulators and improved propagation techniques to enhance flowering, fruit set, plant establishment and overall productivity in cashew. Through his research, he continues to contribute towards developing innovative technologies that support sustainable and climate-resilient cashew cultivation.
